LNG Hub Accelerates South Africa’s Energy Transition with Launch of Import Regas Distribution Depots (IRDDs)

As South Africa works toward a reliable and cleaner energy future, LNG Hub is proud to announce a bold step forward with the development of Import Regas Distribution Depots (IRDDs)—small- to medium-scale liquefied natural gas facilities that offer solutions for industrial energy needs.

The first IRDD is under development in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, with several more in the pipeline. These strategically placed depots provide turnkey LNG supply and distribution for industries such as mining, manufacturing, and transport—especially in regions where pipeline infrastructure is unavailable or still years from completion.

“IRDDs aren’t a stopgap—they’re strategic infrastructure designed to meet today’s energy needs while preparing South Africa for tomorrow’s LNG future,” said a spokesperson for LNG Hub.

While the government’s large-scale LNG projects are still in early phases, IRDDs offer rapid deployment and scalability, acting as bridges to the future LNG network. They also support road and rail-based LNG distribution, making clean energy accessible even in remote or landlocked areas.

Global Case Studies Inspire Local Action

LNG Hub’s IRDD model draws on proven success from around the world:

  • Rotterdam Port, Netherlands: A 30,000m³ terminal launched in 2017 now supplies over 200,000 tonnes of LNG annually across industrial and marine sectors.
  • Japan’s Yokohama Terminal: In operation since 2000, this regional facility integrates with the national grid and supplies more than 300,000 tonnes of LNG annually.
  • Finland’s Skangas Facility: Serving the Nordic region since 2011, this terminal delivers 150,000 tonnes per year while supporting national and cross-border LNG distribution.

These examples highlight how small-scale terminals can integrate seamlessly with larger networks—a vision LNG Hub is now bringing to life in South Africa.

Laying the Groundwork for National Integration

LNG Hub’s IRDDs are part of a broader vision to create a resilient, clean, and integrated LNG network. With site acquisitions in their final stages, environmental clearances process underway and provides gas availability within the next 2 years. LNG Hub is strategically positioned to enhance South Africa’s energy security in the near term while offering a reliable and sustainable long-term supply solution.

The company also plans to introduce Solar-Gas hybrids and Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) solutions in upcoming phases—strengthening the energy mix available to local industries.
